Reflections on Guest Speakers

Top 3 takeaways:

Here are my takeaways from today’s speakers:

1.Always give back to the community

2.Find an internship

3.Do not settle on a job, find what you really want to do

Top 3 strategies to implement:

Here is something I am going to implement or try before the end of this semester:

1.Participate in more community service opportunities

2.Apply to as many internships as I can find

3.Try to figure out what I truly want to do/research jobs in the finance field

I was granted the opportunity to listen to two Walsh alumni last week and I benefited greatly from this experience. Mike Reed and Erica Molina spoke to our class about their careers and provided us with valuable tips and advice for when we begin our job search. My first takeaway came from Mike. He placed a heavy emphasis on always giving back to the community. He gave an interesting quote on the subject stating “Volunteering is the rent you pay for the space you take up on Earth” and I thought this was a unique way of looking at it. I will work hard to participate in as many community service projects as I can from now on. My second takeaway also came from Mike. He said that finding a good internship is a great segway into a possible career, so I am going to begin applying to as many internships as I can to try and land one that interests me. Lastly, Erica shared with us that upon graduation, she landed a job that she worked at for a couple years before transitioning to her current job. She said her first job was a good job that provided a lot of job security and also paid well. She shared that although it seemed like the right thing to do was to keep this job and make a career out of it, she did not overly enjoy it and it was not what she wanted to do. So she took a chance and applied to many jobs on Indeed and ended up landing a job in the field she was really interested in. She seemed very passionate about what she is doing now and it was all because she left her comfort zone to pursue what she really wanted. This goes to show that it is not just about the paycheck, you should pursue a job that makes you happy and that you can enjoy doing on a daily basis. Over the next year, I will really try and decide what it is that I really want to do so that I can pursue a job that will be the best fit for me. The Professor for a Day program was very beneficial and I greatly enjoyed it.
